16 weeks

At sixteen weeks, baby is about the size of a softball! Big developments this week include the balancing out of the head-body ratio, patterning of the scalp (though hair isn't visible yet), and hiccuping. Tiny details are in place now too - including eyelashes, fingernails, and toenails. In the last three weeks, Baby has grown 2 inches, and he or she will double in weight in the next few weeks!

We had our 16 week appointment on Tuesday, but it was pretty anti-climactic. We heard the heartbeat (150 bpm) and chatted with the doctor for a few minutes. He's impressed by my lack of symptoms, and the 4 pounds I've gained puts me under average for now. I feel really great! This pregnancy gig is easy for me. :)

15 weeks

At 15 weeks, baby is approximately the size of an orange. The legs are growing so they're closer to being in proportion with the rest of the body, and all of baby's joints now work. There is a lot of movement going on, which I should feel within the next couple weeks. :) Taste buds are forming, as well as lungs. The heart is working hard to pump 25 quarts of blood a day, which will increase to 200 quarts per day by the time baby is born. Baby's eyes are still fused shut (until 27 weeks), but they can sense light, so baby would move from the light if I shined a flashlight on my belly.

Speaking of my belly, I've still gained just one pound so far. I look different, but the scale isn't showing the difference yet. I pretty much feel like nothing's going on, and my cousin Lindsay Jo and my friend Katie both say I can expect the "nothing" feeling to continue for several more weeks. It is so strange since I know that baby is growing like crazy!

Wanna know what baby looks like? :-)

I got an email yesterday urging me to try the "baby morpher" program. Supposedly it uses FBI-grade face recognition software to combine pictures of the parents and determine what the child will look like. What do you think?

Ryan said, "Wow babe, we're having a red-headed Asian baby?" :) I guess we'll have to be patient and wait until baby arrives to find out what he/she looks like!

14 weeks

We're officially in the 2nd trimester! About the size of a lemon, baby is experimenting with facial expressions this week! :) The neck is lengthening, as well as the arms and legs, and the arms will be in proportion with the body by the end of the week. With the ability to grasp and suck, baby might be thumb sucking by now too. Baby is keeping warm thanks to lanugo, a fine hair covering the body.

I still feel basically the same, though I am having some round ligament pain because the ligaments are stretching and thickening to support the uterus. It isn't super painful, but more like a strange stretchy feeling most times I stand up. I've still only gained 1 pound so far.

Our co-workers and most of our friends now know our exciting news, and we're having fun sharing the experience with the people we love. :)
