Lauren Kate: 3 months

Lauren Kate is 3 months old today!

height:  24 inches
weight:  14.5 pounds
clothing size:  3-6 months

Baby girl is sweet, sweet, sweet.  She is very easy-going and laid-back.  She really only fusses when she's hungry or tired.  She has a huge smile and is so close to laughing.

Her napping schedule is random, but her nights are very consistent.  She sleeps every night from 9pm until 8 or 9 am.  If she has a day full of short naps one day, she'll probably make up for it the next day by taking a super long (4-5 hour!) nap.  Girlfriend loves her sleep!  We've also made great progress this month with Lauren falling asleep on her own.

During the day, Lauren loves to eat.  She's quick and efficient with nursing, but not interested in drinking from a bottle.  We'll keep practicing!

Lauren's cry is usually more of a fuss.  It kinda sounds like an engine that won't turn over.  Ah! Ah! Ah!  Real tears don't happen often, thankfully.

Head control is improving, and Lauren is very strong.  She loves tummy time

and sitting in the bumbo chair.

Sucking on her hands is a new pastime, as is drooling like crazy.

Lauren is really learning to love her big brother.  She gives him huge smiles and really enjoys watching him.  He loves it when she'll hold his finger.

LK has a very expressive face and definitely makes our world brighter!

Collin Cooper: 34 months

Big guy is 34 months old today!  He weighs 31 pounds and he has finally reached the 3' mark.  It doesn't seem like he's growing taller, but now he can reach to turn on light switches, which is something he couldn't do last month.

Collin is a very verbal guy.  Talking and singing are his favorite things to do.  He makes conversation and comes up with the most random things to talk about.  His articulation is becoming very clear and that opens up a new level of conversation ability, because it means everyone understands most of what he says.  He's a very careful listener and doesn't miss a thing.

Favorite songs this month are Wheels on the Bus, If You're Happy and You Know It, Ring Around the Rosy, and One Two Buckle My Shoe.  Collin loves running his own CD player, and music is a very large part of his day.  He knows all 23 songs on his first CD and enjoys singing and dancing while he listens.  Now he doesn't want to listen to new CDs because they have songs he doesn't know.

Fixing also consumes large portions of our days.  Collin has a great workbench and tons of tools.  Each job requires every tool in his collection, regardless of the task.  Once we've used every single tool, we can move to a new job.  He loves carrying his toolbox while he's helping Daddy on projects around the house, and he imitates Daddy's actions perfectly.

Play-doh has made a comeback this month.  Collin particularly likes cutting it, so most of our creations involve the use of a knife.  We also read tons of books, and Collin is really enjoying the new bible we bought this month.  Some of his favorite stories are about Daniel and the lions, Moses being found by Pharaoh's daughter, Jonah being swallowed by a whale, the birth of Jesus, and Jesus feeding the 5000.  Other favorite books are the Bobcat brochure, Click Clack Moo, and You Are My Sunshine.

Collin loves going out and about.  He's a big helper at the grocery store and enjoys making selections from the shelves.  He also loves visiting Daddy's work and helping out on the lot, being brave at the park, seeing family, and going to CBS.

CBS is short for Community Bible Study, and it has been an enormous blessing in our lives!  Every Thursday from 10-noon, Lauren goes to the baby room, Mama is in a study group with nine other women, and Collin is in a class with four other 2-year-olds.  He is learning so much!  He has a free play time with his friends, they do PE and music time in the gym, and then they do a bible lesson.  He makes a craft every week and learns bible songs and verses.  The memory verse for this quarter is "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear." Hebrews 13:6.  Can you imagine how cute it is to hear Collin chant that?  And he even knows the reference!  The Lord's words are being planted in Collin's heart and we are so, so grateful for the program.

In addition to plenty of outings, we've also had lots of friends over in the past month.  Collin does a wonderful job sharing his toys.  He's bossy (wonder where he gets that from?!), so it's really great for him to get plenty of practice playing with other kids who won't necessarily do what he tells them to.  He's learning fantastic social skills - apologizing, accepting apologies, inviting friends to join him, etc.

Collin has also learned a lot this month about what it takes to be a great big brother.  He's getting much better at being gentle, moving slowly around Lauren, and using a quiet voice so he doesn't scare her.  He says the funniest things to her, such as "Good morning Punkydoodle!  Did you have a good snooze?" and "Oh!  Is that what you say?"  Collin loves to be silly and make Lauren smile!

Though we have a fantastic and easy-going boy, this is our first month of limits really being tested.  "Obey" is a pretty common part of our conversations these days.  Collin is learning about consequences, and he's so compliant about them.  "I'm sorry Daddy.  I didn't obey.  Next time I will listen!"  Even when he's struggling, he's still a very, very good boy.

Collin is a precious, tender-hearted little guy and aims to please.  He is hilarious and brilliant.  He is creative and fascinating.  He's really fun to be around and we are very proud of him.  We are so grateful for the gift of being his parents!

naptime: optional

After 2.75 years of faithfully napping every single day, we're at a stage now where Collin can skip a nap without completely disintegrating by the end of the day.  It works especially well on Sundays when we're busy all day with Daddy, because Collin can keep working with his daddy rather than missing out on the action to go take a nap.  It's nice to have a little more flexibility, though we still want him to nap every day if possible.

Somedays Collin will crash immediately when he gets into his crib for naptime.  Other days he exercises his right to stay awake.  Either way is fine, really.  If he decides to stay awake, he stays busy by bringing books into his crib.

Yesterday Collin played in his crib for about an hour and then started saying, "Mommy!  I'm right here!  Wait you!," which is what he always says when he wakes up and is ready to get out of his crib. I went into his room and this conversation ensued...

"Bud, you forgot to take a nap!"
"Oh, did I?"
"Yeah, you did.  Now it's time to sleep."
"I will take a nap.  Night-night Mommy."

After I left, he started singing, which is a typical way to pass the time until he falls asleep.  The best part was when he was singing at the top of his lungs A-B-C-D-E-F-G... and then suddenly fell asleep mid-alphabet.

Here's what the first hour of today's "naptime" looked like.

(video of video...  I recorded my view on his video monitor.)

He ended up falling asleep shortly after I recorded.

He's such a cool kid!

Collin says some really funny things.

A few examples:

"Tomorrow is another day."

"I know, Lauren.  It's a hard life."

"How cool is that?"

"Good enough." (after fixing something)

"That's my best ______." (fruit, game, book, etc.)

Other funny words and phrases he uses include "you guys," "also," and "supposedly."

It is such a blast to watch as his communication skills continue to develop.

telling stories

Lauren has a lot to say.

Collin and Eli

One of Collin's best buddies, Eli, lives in our neighborhood and we do a playdate most weeks.

Today they were pretending to be dinosaurs and cracking each other up.

We are blessed with great friends.

Lauren loves the bath!

This little girl loves tub time!

She kicks her legs

and smiles like crazy!

Happy girl!

We hear regular comments about how expressive Lauren's face is.

sad face

surprised face

 mid-squeal face :-)

cute face

stretching face

 confused face

happy face!

We're lucky to see the happy face most often!

a basketball game

The Yellow Jackets had their first home basketball game this weekend, so we went to check it out.

Lauren watched the whole first half!

One of Collin's favorite parts is seeing Sting, the mascot.  He wasn't there, so Collin settled for clapping and shaking his booty to the music.

When we went out for a snack during halftime, we found Sting!

Collin was thrilled to high-five him

and chat with him.

Standing by him for a picture?  Collin was totally mortified.

Maybe next time, big guy. :-)

the sweetest baby girl in the world

Lauren Kate is such a sweetie.  We are absolutely blessed by our laid-back, happy girl!

No, I won't be smiling for the camera.

Eh, maybe I'll just do happy eyes.

Oh, alright!  I'll smile. :-)

Precious girl, we love you so much!

Collin has been busy with playdates and I want to do a better job documenting.

Today his friend Oreyna came over.  They played really well together!  Here, they're playing with play-doh and snacking on goldfish.

Lauren had a friend over too!  She and Tikka just laid around. :-)

We love using our house to host friends!

a strange night

Twice last night, Collin woke up crying, which he never, ever does.  The second time, at 3am, he wanted to come to our bed.  Except he didn't want to sleep.  Though squirmy, he was pretty quiet in our bed until about 4:45.

At that point, I decided to take him back to his room.  It didn't look like he was going to fall asleep, so I told him he could play as long as he stayed in his room.  That was all well and good until about 7.  He snuggled in beside me on the floor and fell asleep until 9!

What an odd night!  The last time this happened he ended up with croup the following day.  Fingers crossed that last night was just a fluke!

reading the paper

Collin rediscovered a kids' newspaper we got from the fish hatchery a couple months ago, and he's really been enjoying it.

He even shares it with his sister! :-)
